Prof. George Carey, Rest in Peace

ISI mourns the loss of George W. Carey, one of the foremost interpreters of the American political tradition and a mentor to countless students through a half century of teaching.

A longtime professor of government at Georgetown University, Carey first made his name in the 1960s through his close working relationship with political scientist Willmoore Kendall, a collaboration that produced several articles and a seminal book, The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition (1970). Throughout his long and productive career, Carey ably defended the American constitutional order bequeathed by the Founding Fathers from those he saw as bent on its destruction.

ISI was privileged to have Professor Carey serve on its board of trustees for many years. The Institute was equally honored to publish his books Freedom and Virtue: The Conservative/Libertarian Debate and A Student’s Guide to American Political Thought, both perennial favorites of ISI students. For many years, too, Professor Carey served as editor of the Political Science Reviewer, an associate editor of Modern Age, and an editorial adviser to the Intercollegiate Review, all published by ISI at the time.
