The ‘Health’ ‘Care’ Hoax

There is much to be said about the Obamcare “rollout”—to quote Jonah Goldberg, “I put quotation marks around ‘rollout’ because the term implies actual rolling, and this thing has moved as gracefully as a grand piano in a peat bog”—but this little gem of reporting, from National Review Online’s Betsy Woodruff, about captures nationalized healthcare in all its grandeur:

Multiple individual plans available on the D.C. health insurance exchange specifically cover elective abortion but not hearing aids, routine foot-care, and routine eye-care.

It’s well-nigh impossible to be surprised at such news, but it’s still worth a heavy sigh. We can agree, Left and Right alike, that every American should have access to affordable health care, and yet disagree on the tactics. But supplying insurance coverage for elective abortions is not a difference of tactics toward a mutually agreeable aim; it is a finger-in-the-eye of consensus-building.

Episodes like these prove the lie not just of Obamacare but of each of liberalism’s grand schemes. Those on the Right inclined to give liberals the benefit of the doubt when it comes to motives are understandably embittered when noble-sounding actions are used merely as cover for partisan ambitions.

But, hey, why worry? Under the Affordable Care Act, elective abortion is still not an “essential benefit.” So, you know, there’s that.
