Washington vs. Washington

“I now make it my earnest prayer, that God would have you, and the State over which you preside, in his holy protection, that he would incline the hearts of the Citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to Government, to entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another, for their fellow Citizens of the United States at large, and particularly for their brethren who have served in the Field, and finally, that he would most graciously be pleased to dispose us all, to do Justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that Charity, humility and pacific temper of mind, which were the Characteristicks of the Divine Author of our blessed Religion, and without an humble imitation of whose example in these things, we can never hope to be a happy Nation.”

George Washington, circular letter of farewell to the Army, 1783

Well, we’ve come full circle. Gone are the days of “God bless America.” It’s time to say farewell to the warmhearted pride of all those citizens who sent “our boys” off with pocket-Bibles or rosaries, asking God to keep them safe or let them die heroically. America was once a nation under God, but now that nation only lives “in our hearts”, as we say of the deceased.

We living pay our taxes to a different kind of nation. A nation under the impression that it is above God. Unlike the Washington who prayed especially for the military that “presided” over the State, Obama’s Washington is stifling Christianity from the military altogether.

I’ve got a question for Obama’s Washington: Looking through your history books, tell me who your heroes are. Is one of them America’s first president, who wished the army well with prayer and hoped that they would “preside” over us with Christian clemency? Or are you more an imitator of the leaders who stripped their armies of religion, all of whom proceeded afterward to oppress and persecute their fellow citizens?

For those of you who see no evil, you are the reason why we have so little hope of being a “happy Nation.”
