When A Dog Is Worth More Than A Human

If a dog mauls a child, is it even a question of whether the dog will live? For me, it is obvious that the dog needs to be euthanized. If a dog has proven themselves to be a danger to human beings, then euthanizing the canine is a natural and moral thing.

Apparently not so for a Phoenix judge. According to the Associated Press, a four year boy was attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull. The dog broke the boy’s eye socket and jaw, and faces extensive reconstruction surgery. In similar fashion, a judge last year ruled to keep a dog alive, after the dog fatally mauled a toddler. Animal rights activist around the country are calling this a victory for animals everywhere, and in court, one animal rights activist broke down in tears out of joy upon hearing the ruling.

Seriously?

When I saw this article, I was hoping it was an article from The Onion! But upon further research, this turned up to be true. Have we lost our minds? A dog’s life is worth as much as a human’s– or more  than, in the case of abortion sympathizers who double as animal rights activists. Is this a message our culture and society wants to send? Where did we go wrong?

A sign of the times is the blatant and vicious attack on the dignity of the human person. Our culture values animals over human beings.  Isn’t it the court’s job to first protect the life of humans? After all, Thomas Jefferson says “The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government.” We are swimming into dangerous waters.
