You drive a smart car? - Intercollegiate Studies Institute

You drive a smart car?

I was driving down the interstate in my gas guzzling truck at a brisk 75 miles per hour, when a so-called Smart car whipped around me doing a good 85 mph. Of course, seeing this rash driving in a car the size of a soup can made me think; how smart is the Smart car?

Ok great, you can get 38 miles per gallon highway, as compared to my 17…so what? If that car hits something going 40 mph, the driver and passenger are done for. Seriously, have you seen this crash rating?

Maybe it is just me, but I fail to see the logic surrounding these cars. These car are clearly a joke:  the some of America’s finest have even abandoned the old tradition of cow-tipping and have started flipping Smart cards instead.

So, as a good American, I pose a question to these Smart car owners: Why?  Are we as a country so wrapped up in being “environmentally friendly” that we make irrational decisions such as owning one of these matchbox cars?

I hope, as a truck-driving, red-blooded Southern American, that the Smart car fad fades into the distance, like the Hustle and Pogs (right?).
