Join us for a Buckley Society Retreat and Investors Meeting at ISI’s Third Annual Homecoming weekend.

Hosted on ISI’s beautiful 20-acre campus in Wilmington, Delaware, this year’s Homecoming theme is “The Next Great American.” Through engaging presentations, we will explore the statesmen, titans of industry, and artists that have shaped our nation throughout its history. 

Highlights include:

  • Friday night: A dinner honoring the winner of ISI’s 2023 Conservative Book of the Year Award, Dr. Daniel J. Mahoney for The Statesman as Thinker
  • Saturday morning: Breakfast and Annual Investors Meeting for Buckley Society Supporters at the Hotel du Pont, followed by a special outing to a historically important local site (more details to come)  
  • Saturday Reunion luncheons: Luncheons for Graduate Fellows; Honors Scholars, Society Leaders, Collegiate Network Editors, Interns, and Fellows to reconnect
  • Saturday afternoon: A reunion conference featuring panels on the purpose of the liberal arts and the future of higher ed
  • Saturday evening: A reception featuring food, live music, and dancing on ISI’s campus

Harrison Scott Key

Harrison Scott Key is the author of How to Stay Married, Congratulations, Who Are You Again?, and The World’s Largest Man, winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor. His first TEDx talk went viral among a certain demographic.

Lee Edwards

Lee Edwards, former distinguished fellow in conservative thought at The Heritage Foundation, is a leading historian of American conservatism, who has published more than 25 books.

His books include biographies of Ronald Reagan, Barry Goldwater, William F. Buckley, Jr. and Edwin Meese III as well as histories of The Heritage Foundation and the American conservative movement. His works have been translated into Chinese, Japanese, French, Hungarian, Polish, and Swedish.

HW Brands

H. W. BRANDS holds the Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair in History at the University of Texas at Austin. A New York Times bestselling author, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in biography for The First American and Traitor to His Class.

Dana Gioia

Dana Gioia is an internationally acclaimed poet and writer. Former California Poet laureate and  Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Gioia was born in Los Angeles of Italian and Mexican descent. The first person in his family to attend college, he received a B.A. and M.B.A. from Stanford and an M.A. from Harvard in Comparative Literature. For fifteen years he worked as a businessman before quitting at forty-one to become a full-time writer.

About this year's Conservative Book of the Year Award Winner

In The Statesman as Thinker, Daniel J. Mahoney provides thoughtful and elegant portraits of statesmen who struggled to preserve freedom during times of crisis: Cicero using all the powers of rhetoric to preserve republican liberty in Rome against Caesar’s encroaching autocracy; Burke defending ordered liberty against Jacobin tyranny in revolutionary France; Tocqueville defending liberty and human dignity against blind reaction, democratic impatience, and revolutionary fanaticism; Lincoln preserving the American republic and putting an end to chattel slavery; Churchill defending liberty and law and opposing Nazi and Communist despotism; and Havel fighting Communism before 1989 and then leading the Czech Republic with dignity and grace.

Mahoney makes sense of the mixture of magnanimity and moderation that defines the statesman as thinker at his or her best. That admirable mixture of greatness, courage, and moderation owes much to classical and Christian wisdom and to the noble desire to protect the inheritance of civilization against rapacious and destructive despotic regimes and ideologies.
