High Gables

Robert Beum taught history at a variety of Canadian colleges and universities for several decades. His essays have appeared in numerous scholarly journals.

They’d built that house up to the sun and moon.
We opened windows and the stars fell in
With stories all night, and we’d stay awake
Striding past Mars, heroes on Mercury.
They’d built that brick up to the first blue light
Lifting the city to the sky, built way
Above everything bare, square, flat, beneath
What boys are. Years were living for the night:
We opened windows and the stars fell in
With stories: if you’d heard them you could stay
Awake, that child above the leveling years.
