The University of Oxford. The University of Pennsylvania. The Supreme Court of the United States. The White House. The Treasury Department.
These are just some of the distinguished institutions on Heath Tarbert’s résumé. Before all those stops, Heath was an ISI Honors Fellow and student leader at Mount St. Mary’s University. In fact, he signed up so many ISI members that he won the Institute’s national recruitment contest in 1995. “ISI,” he says, “introduced me to ideas that have profoundly shaped my intellectual development.”
After earning four advanced degrees—including a law degree from Penn and a doctor of philosophy in comparative law from Oxford—Heath clerked for Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas and served as associate counsel to President George W. Bush. He later headed the U.S. bank regulatory group at the global law firm of Allen & Overy. From 2014-2017, Heath served as a senior fellow at the Harvard Law SchoolProgram on International Financial Systems.
Heath currently serves as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, having been nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate. In this role, Heath oversees a diverse portfolio of international economic issues, including the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, the World Bank and other multilateral development banks, and the Financial Stability Board of the G-20.
